about Sedation Dentistry

What is Anesthesia, Sedation Dentistry or sometimes even called “Sleep Dentistry”?
Oral surgeons are trained and qualified in all types of anesthesia, from local to general and everything in between. We spend at least four years in residency in a hospital learning how to evaluate, deliver, and monitor patients under anesthesia.

We will discuss the sedation options with you so that you can choose the one you prefer and which we feel is best suited to your circumstances:
Local Anesthesia – an anesthetic applied directly to the area of removal
Nitrous Oxide – also known as laughing gas, an anesthetic option used in congruence with other anesthetic options to calm anxiety during the procedure
Sedation Anesthesia – administered through an intravenous (IV) line that allows you to sleep during the procedure
General Anesthesia – an anesthetic delivered to allow a deep sleep during the procedure
What are the benefits of Sedation Dentistry?
Being sedated while you have dental work completed brings with it many benefits. Your anxiety will be relieved, you will be less aware or totally unaware of the procedure being carried out and your fear will be a thing of the past.
What can you expect from Anesthesia?
  • No food or drinks 8 hours prior to your procedure
  • Bring a responsible adult to accompany you to your appointment and can drive you home following IV or general sedation, or if you are taking oral sedatives.
  • We will make you comfortable before, during, and after your procedure using the discussed anesthesia plan.
How do I get started?
When you meet with your doctor at Plantation Oral Surgery to discuss your procedure, we'll also review your sedation options – which for implants are primarily general anesthesia and IV sedation..
